I’ve been looking to change my phone over the last 4 weeks. Presently I have a Nokia N95 8GB which seemed great when I got it nearly 18 months ago. The problem is that phones are moving on so quickly now. 12 month contracts used to be the norm but now 18 months seems to be the minimum. Couple this with the alarming rates of progress in technology and whatever phone you choose now could seem like a dinosaur in 18 months time.
For this reason I’ve decided that my next move has to be a smartphone. I want apps, I want proper internet access, I want push email not just for one account but for all of my accounts, I want to be able to take good pictures and video but I still want to be able to make and receive phone calls. I’m drawn (like everyone else) to the iphone but I think it’s expensive so the next best alternative is an android phone.
Every article on the internet will tell you how great the Apple app store is and how many apps are there. Android apps seem to be getting more and more popular but by no means as are there as many apps as there are with Apple. In terms of hardware there are good phones out there that can rival the iphone such as the HTC Hero and many of them cost less than an iphone too.
So which way do I go? I think I’ll probably go with the Android route. What I like is that it is open source so it will always be easier to work with and adapt. Hopefully more and more developers will make apps for the Android market. I also like the fact that Google launched Android and I don’t see them backing down to the mighty Apple without a fight. Also, with Apple you get one phone albeit a great one, but with Android the choice can only get better and personally I’m holding out for the HTC Bravo.
So, Android it is for me. What do you say? All comments appreciated.
